International Architectural Competition

FOR RECONSTRUCTION, IMPROVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
urban environment in the area around the Market Square of Stara Zagora.

INVITATION

The competition is organized due to the Municipality of Stara Zagora’s demand for COMPLETE CONCEPT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT, IMPROVEMENT AND DESIGN of the urban environment and an IDEA SOLUTION for “Pazarska” str. and the square space behind the department store, locked between the “Tsar Simeon the Veliki” Blvd., “Russki” Blvd., “Knyaz Boris” str. and “Kolyo Ganchev’ str., Stara Zagora, Bulgaria

The Competition

The competition is open to all Bulgarian and foreign persons or their associations, without restrictions

The Municipality of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria will commission the first ranked participant to develop a technical and detailed investment project.

Competition Scope

The territorial scope of the competition includes three naturally distinct areas.

Zone one includes the Central department store and the area behind it, incorporating underground parking on two levels and a plaza space.

The main defining feature of the zone is the building of the Eski Mosque, an immovable cultural property of national importance, converted into a Museum of Religions and operational since 2011.

A second zone is formed between “Tsar Ivan Shishman” str. and “Petar Parchevich” str. is crossed by “Pazarska” str. and with definite commercial functions of the objects facing the street.

The area is saturated with a variety of buildings with different uses.

The third zone is dominated by the Market.

This area of the competition area is extremely active, being saturated with commercial space, relocatables, offices and restaurants. 

The many cafes and food courts that have tables and seating on the street during the summer months.

Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at UASG, Sofia and lecturer at the Department of Interior and Design for Architecture. Together with Assoc. dr. architect Maria Davcheva is the founder of Architectural Studio MIODESIGN and online platform for interior design VIDEA. Orlin Davchev is the author of a number of projects and realizations in the field of urban planning, architecture and interiors. He is a co-author of the reconstruction of the Central Pedestrian Zone in Vratsa.
He has won national and international awards, including Architecton, Zlaten Kapitel, Building of the Year, BIG SEE, International Academy of Architecture, etc. He is the author of monographs, textbooks, scientific and popular publications in the field of contemporary architecture. He is involved in a number of scientific and educational projects.

Professional experience in Rome and Amsterdam; based in Tirana; part of iRI Architecture. Displaying particular attention to the social context, she is now engaged in projects that are transforming the landscape of Tirana and nearby cities. Urban planner and architect with a focus on cultural heritage

Founding President of Almatoya Architecture Worked in the Ministry of Culture in France, as architect of French buildings in Seine-Maritime and Paris, where he was responsible for the conservation of major state monuments. For 7 years he was President of the National Association of Architects of French Buildings (ANABF). Deputy Director for Quality of the Living Environment at the Directorate General for Planning, Housing and Nature (DGALN), he coordinated the creation of the Géoportail de l’urbanisme in Paris. France’s representative to the United Nations Environment Programme as coordinator of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction. Worked in the French Directorate General for Risk Prevention (DGPR) for construction in flood-prone areas, also worked in Gujarat, India.

Originally from Stara Zagora. Participated in the preparation of the competition brief.

ANGEL BONDOV

Gained experience in the field by participating in the development of a number of spatial planning and strategic documents. Over the last 5 years he has focused his efforts on the more social, direct and creative side of urbanism, namely: working with citizens and involving them in various processes aimed at improving the public urban environment.
As a co-founder and part of the association “|Not|Formal”, Angel gained significant practical experience in using the “placemaking” approach, which follows exactly the above values – putting the person at the center of planning and improving the urban environment. He is an expert in the initiatives “_The Spot”, “Vision for Sofia”, ONE ARCHITECTURE WEEK, Sofia Service Jam, Tooltest Day and is an active member of the professional network “Placemaking Europe”.
